Get your Creative Practice into Schools

A unique opportunity to learn from creative professionals and the schools that commission them.

• Workshops from professionals including Jan Roman and Iris Bertz

• Seminars with current heads of schools

• Panel discussions with a range of artists and creatives

The 'Winter Workshops' Programme has been commissioned by Arts Connect West Midlands, and will be delivered by Creative Alliance in association with artsmedialearning - a network of freelance artists, creatives and independent companies who work with children and young people.

This three session programme is designed to enable freelance artists/creatives and independent arts/creative companies to:

• Take stock and make sense of their offers for children/young people.

• Think through new services, approaches, materials or plans.

• Test their thinking and start to put it into action.

0900 – 1000: Creative Breakfast presentation with Nicola Richardson
1000 – 1115: Appreciative Inquiry with Iris Bertz
1115 – 1130: Break
1130 – 1230: Effective Selling to Schools with Jan Roman
1230 – 1330: Lunch
1330 – 1430: Workshop 1
1430 – 1530: Workshop 2
1530 – 1545: Break
1545 – 1700: Panel discussion with professional working effectively in school

Due to availability Jan Roman will now only be doing a morning session, which all participants will be able to take part in. Participants will then still have the choice of two workshops in the afternoon –

- Effective Presentation led by Iris Bertz
- Effective Marketing led by Denise Harrison
- Effective Sales Planning led by Noel Dunne

There will be the chance to attend an optional meal at the end of this day.

Saturday 9th February

0900 – 1700:
Iris Bertz and Noel Dunne will facilitate this session, and the full schedule will finalised following feedback from the first 2 sessions. It will include:
  • Evaluation, reflection and sharing of the learning from the 1st and 2nd sessions. This will give participants the chance to share ideas, and for those who have not attended the previous sessions to catch up and learn from fellow participants.
  • A Constructive Networking session with fellow participants
  • Group activity – discussing how to take what you have learnt and move forwards to improve your effectiveness in working with schools. Participants will be encouraged to commit to make a definite step forwards e.g. commit to producing a new flyer promoting your service.

The final programme for this session will be confirmed following feedback from the first session.


As a result of taking part in this Winter Workshop programme, artists / independent arts organisations will:

  1. Have a greater understanding about how schools commission / purchase services.
  2. Have considered their offers and what they might need to do to make their offer more attractive and / or approach more effective.
  3. Produced at least one new piece of publicity, new marketing / sales plan or approach.


Places on the Winter Workshops programme are priced at £35 per person. This includes attendance on all three workshops: Saturday 26th January, Friday 1st February and Saturday 9th February.

There are also a limited amount of single day tickets available for those who cannot make all three days. These are individually priced:

Saturday 9th February - £12
